Life Portrayed By Movie Characters

Hey there, I am Shane Rollins, and this is a little bit about me! I am an incoming transfer from college of DuPage, so this is my first semester back in a classroom in three years. While taking part in remote learning, I picked up a lot of interesting and entertaining hobbies, although only 3 have stood the test of time. While taking school online, I found enough time in the day to have a fulltime job with my dad delivering ice cream. I had to think of a way to not let the amount of Ben and Jerry's I ate affect my physical health too much, so I picked up running! Not only do I still run, but I have also actually participated in some competitive races and done surprisingly well! In fact, I ran a half-marathon not too long ago, although I still have stress fractures all over my feet. I also picked up reading as a source of entertainment because I figured that would benefit me more than playing video games all day. My favorite books to read are the Harry Potter series, mostly because I like to watch the movies after finishing each chapter. Lastly, one of my favorite hobbies is watching movies then scoring them on a scale of one to ten! The highest rating I have ever given was a 9.6 for a movie called Green Book from 2018.

If I could relate my life to a movie character's life, I would choose Simba from Lion King. I would not say that I am like him solely because I lost my father about 5 months ago, it is more based on the journey Simba takes to come to terms with his responsibilities. Simba is obviously an unconventional lion, although he eventually comes back to realization that he is meant to reign as the King of the Pride Lands. After a long journey through heartache, despair, and grief, I have remembered my responsibilities and am back in the school where I belong! Here at school, I am majoring in psychology to eventually earn my therapy license. I fell in love with psychology about three years ago and have been obsessed with it ever since.

Another character that I could relate to in my life too is Andrew from Whiplash played by Miles Teller. I think I could relate to him the best, mostly because he is able to find motivation to keep doing what he is passionate about no matter what circumstance he is in. I will never forget my first year of high school. I was very overweight and not authentic in the slightest. I would dance to make the crowd laugh, although there were times where I would cry when I got home because I felt like a sideshow act. When the summer came around, I made plans to try and lose weight and would not stop until I lost 50 pounds. With so many failed attempts at losing weight in the past, I had low expectations. Not only did I walk into the first day of school 80 pounds lighter, but I also walked in with no intention of ever making myself look foolish for a laugh again.

  1. So cool that you shared certain experiences of your life as it pertains to the way we watch films. It makes the characters feel more real when we relate to them on a personal level. I am so sorry for your loss, but also so glad that you were able to come out on the other side a more fulfilled person. (I also really like the Harry Potter movies.)
